Winter Wildfires Destroy 1,000 Homes in Boulder County, Colorado

On December 30, 2021, the entire towns of Louisville and Superior, located in Boulder County, Colorado about 20 miles north of Denver, were evacuated and thousands of people were forced to flee with little notice as grass fires –driven by intense 110 mile per hour winds, severe drought and unseasonably warm temperatures– quickly swept through the area destroying homes, businesses and entire neighborhoods. The fires spread so fast that water supplies for firefighters nearly ran dry, prompting local water treatment plant operators to release raw, untreated water to fight the flames.

Racial Justice Coverage

colorado editorial photographer

When protests against police violence and racial injustice started in Denver, I first watched what was happening on TV from my home. A lot of coverage from the local news stations was focused on dumpster fires and smashed windows with almost everything being filmed at night. I started questioning if we were being told the complete story.  I decided to go to the protests and see for myself. What I saw was entirely different…

Protesters block an exit to the Aurora Police precinct where officers who arrested Elijah McClain are stationed and cover their ears in anticipation of the use of a long-range acoustic crowd control weapon by police in Aurora, Colorado, July 3, 2020. The protesters barricade 18 officers inside the building in a standoff that lasts into the early hours of the morning and demand the firing of the officers involved in the arrest of McClain.

Youth activists take over a normally busy highway and lay face-down with their hands behind their backs chanting “I can’t breath” repeatedly for eight minutes and 46 seconds during a protest for racial justice led by high school students that blocked traffic on the main route to the airport, Peña Boulevard, in Denver, Colorado, June 6, 2020. The demonstration was organized to call attention to police brutality in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody.
